By meticulously tracking and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions, we have not only reduced our environmental impact but also contributed to a more sustainable future.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --> <ul> <li>When compared to the previous year, our overall emissions have reduced. Our scope 1 was reduced by 50% and scope 2 was maintained at zero. </li> <li>We achieved a significant reduction in net emissions, with 124% of total emissions offset by providing electric two-wheelers to all our team members, resulting in an 84% decrease in daily commute emissions, compared to FY 21-22.</li> <li>100% of our electricity demand was met through renewable energy from rooftop solar, generating an excess of 3,959 kWh, making AVC an energy-positive organization.</li> <li>100% of our waste is recycled, ensuring minimal environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.</li> <li>We composted 100% of our wet waste, totaling 295.26 kg, which not only reduced waste disposal to landfill, but also produced nutrient-rich compost for our local gardens.</li> </ul> PSH is crucial in the evolving <a href="https://www.aurovilleconsulting.com/tamil-nadu-renewable-energy-scenarios-2030/">energy landscape</a>, characterized by the increasing presence of variable and intermittent renewable energy sources like <a href="https://www.aurovilleconsulting.com/solar-plus-energy-storage/">solar</a> and wind. These renewables pose significant challenges to grid stability, making integrating storage and ancillary services imperative. Among various storage technologies, PSH stands out as a clean, domestically available, and internationally accepted solution that has proven effective over time.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p>The <a href="https://www.teriin.org/sites/default/files/2024-01/Pumped_Storage%20_Plants_Discussion_Paper_2023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">global status</a> of PSH highlights its <a href="https://www.hydropower.org/factsheets/pumped-storage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">importance</a>, with substantial renewable capacity added in recent years. Countries like China, Japan, and the United States lead in PSH technology, facilitating the integration of fast-growing renewables into the grid. In India, the potential for PSH is notable, with several projects in various stages of development.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p>PSH operates by pumping water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during periods of surplus electricity, storing energy for later use. When demand is high, water flows back down through turbines, generating power. This process allows PSH plants to balance <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/pumped-storage-hydroelectricity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">electricity</a> supply and demand efficiently, providing a reliable power source. PSH presents numerous benefits, including sustainable storage of surplus electricity generated during peak hours of solar and wind utilization. It promotes local development, offers extended discharge durations, and ensures high reliability.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p><a href="https://www.swri.org/sites/default/files/brochures/closedloop-pumped-storage-hydropower_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Closed-loop or off-river</a> PSH systems have fewer environmental impacts compared to open-loop systems. By not maintaining continuous connections to flowing bodies, they reduce surface water disturbances, benefiting aquatic ecosystems. The scope of this report is to identify reservoirs suitable for developing PSH in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalrayan_Hills" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kalvarayan Hills</a> area of <a href="https://kallakurichi.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kallakurichi District</a> and assess the extent to which these sites overlap with unused lands.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p>The site suitability assessment involves a two-step filtration process to identify reservoirs that consecutively meet technical and highest potential criteria. The report identifies 311 reservoir pairings meeting the technical criteria, collectively representing a PSH capacity of 14,159 GWh. These reservoirs span various capacity ranges, revealing significant technical potential for developing off-river PSH in the Kalvarayan Hills.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p>The evaluation indicates a promising future for PSH in Tamil Nadu. Developing PSH on sites with a high share of unused land ensures minimal impact on land cover. PSH’s flexibility and suitability for extended operation make it a dominant player in the global energy storage landscape. The next part of the analysis can include a cost model and grid modelling to fully understand <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/renewables-integration-in-india" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PSH’s Unplanned and unscientific use of land can exacerbate climate change and disasters like drought or floods. Judicious use of land resources is key in meeting the state’s social, economic, and</span><a href="https://moef.gov.in/moef/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">environmental development</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> goals. A comprehensive land suitability assessment can guide responsible and sustainable development practices and land-use policies.</span></p> <p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_Nadu" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tamil Nadu</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is planning to increase its tree cover from 23% to</span><a href="https://cms.tn.gov.in/sites/default/files/go/env_e_126_2021.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">33% of the total geographic area</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (TGA) by the year 2030. Almost 1,06,05,541 acres of land have to be under tree cover to meet this target. Currently, the state has 23% of its TGA under tree cover, which is 73,91,741 acres. An additional area of 32,13,800 acres of land needs to be forested to meet the state target.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Forests in many parts of India, including Tamil Nadu, are facing numerous challenges, including deforestation, degradation, loss of biodiversity, and conflicts between forest-dependent communities and forest authorities. The</span><a href="https://en.climate-data.org/asia/india/tamil-nadu/villupuram-34141/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">climate of Villupuram</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, with its hot and dry summers and moderate rainfall, is suitable for the growth of certain types of</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">forests</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, such as tropical dry deciduous forests and thorn forests. These forests are adapted to survive in regions with high temperatures and irregular rainfall patterns. Trees such as Teak, Neem, Tamarind, Indian laurel, Acacia, Prosopis, Ziziphus and Jackfruit are common along with Banyan, Fig, and Bamboo near rivers and other water bodies. However, excessive deforestation, land-use changes, and human activities can negatively impact the forest cover in the region, leading to degradation and loss of biodiversity. It is important to implement effective</span><a href="https://fsi.nic.in/uploads/documents/technical-information-series-vol1-no3-16-06-2019.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">forest conservation</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and management strategies to protect and enhance the forest cover in Villupuram and other similar regions (</span><a href="https://mausam.imd.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">IMD</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">;</span><a href="https://www.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">NIC</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, MoE and IT 2023).</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The objective of this report is to identify unused lands in<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viluppuram_district" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Villupuram district</a> and to evaluate to what extent these unused lands can be utilized to meet the state’s forest target of 33% of the total geographic area (TGA) under tree cover by the year 2030. Villupuram, district has a total geographical area of 3,907 km2 of which 1,092 km2 or 28% has been classified as unused or fallow lands. The technically suitable lands will help fulfil 85.29 % of the district target which is an area of 1,92,914 acres or 781 km2 of land. This would result in the creation of a carbon stock to the tune of 6.52 million tonnes of carbon (MtC). Of these identified technical lands, 1,674 acres or 6.7 km2 of land were meeting the high potential criteria. These lands are distributed over 95 plots in the district. This can generate a carbon stock of 0.06 MtC. To estimate the carbon stock, the coefficient of 33.82 tonnes of carbon (tC) per acre is utilised. This coefficient has been obtained from carbon stock values of forests in Tamil Nadu, as per<a href="https://moef.gov.in/moef/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> The Ministry of Environment</a>, Forest and Climate Change,<a href="https://fsi.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Forest Survey of India</a> (FSI, 2017), (FSI, 2019), (FSI, 2021).</span></p> <p><div target="_blank" rel="noopener">disclose and report their CO2 emissions</a> is imperative for achieving Tamil Nadu’s <a title="" href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1945472" target="_blank" rel="noopener">net zero emission targets</a>. Transparent reporting catalyses informed decision-making among consumers, policymakers, and investors. Policymakers, armed with accurate information about emission sources, volume, and intensities, can formulate targeted regulations and incentives to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. Establishing emission reduction targets for electricity utilities is pivotal in mitigating climate change. These targets provide a clear roadmap for a transition towards a net zero emission future. Rigorous targets propel utilities to prioritize renewable energy integration, thereby driving systemic change.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p>The purpose of this note is to introduce CO2 emission tracking for <a title="" href="https://www.tangedco.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TANGEDCO,</a> currently, the only electricity distribution licensee operating in Tamil Nadu. The information in this report relies on the power plant-wise <a title="" href="https://cea.nic.in/cdm-co2-baseline-database/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CO2 database from the Central Electricity Authority</a> (CEA 2022) for the fiscal years spanning from 2017-2018 to 2020-21.</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:paragraph --></p> <p>Key findings are:</p> <p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p> <p><!-- wp:list --></p> <ul> <li>In 2022, fossil fuel-derived energy sources constituted 71% of TANGEDCO’s overall energy supply.</li> <li>Out of the 25,341 MU increase in power demand between 2017 and 2022, 65% was fulfilled through the generation of energy from fossil fuels.</li> <li>TANGEDCO experienced a 33% rise in absolute annual CO2 emissions from 2017 to 2022.</li> <li>CO2 emissions from lignite-based power plants more than doubled during this period.</li> <li>The weighted average emission factor for TANGEDCO’s power decreased from 0.76 tCO2/MWh to 0.75 tCO2/MWh.</li> <li>In the fiscal year 2021-22, the weighted average emission factor of 0.75 tCO2/MWh for TANGEDCO’s power surpassed the national average of 0.72 tCO2/MWh in the same year.</li> </ul>
